Shower drains are one of the most commonly clogged drains in the home. Hair and soap scum can build up and cause showers to drain too slowly. There are several steps you can take prevent drains from clogging along with periodic maintenance to ensure that you won’t need costly repairs. Clogs in the bathtub generally become a gradual problem until suddenly you’re standing ankle deep in dirty water.
Invest in a Drain Cover
A simple hair trap or drain cover should do the trick when it comes to hair clogs. Both human hair and pet hair create matted clogs and get entangled through an internal chain which operates the drain stopper. Shower drain covers are not only practical but they’re relatively cheap and convenient to purchase.
Use a High-Quality Clog Remover
When purchasing a clog remover from the store, make sure that you are using a good quality cleaner. A lot of commercial cleaners have hazardous chemicals so you’ll want to read reviews as well as the ingredients. When purchasing a reliable cleaner, you will notice hair, soap and other build-up will be broken down. Choose from gel, foam and liquid drain cleaners – all of which offer their own benefits.
If you don’t feel comfortable using a cleaner in your shower due to the chemicals, stop the blockage with boiling water. Once you pour the water down the drain, turn on the shower for roughly five minutes.
You can also try pouring one cup of bleach into the drain at night and then in the morning, run the warm water for several minutes.
