What Are the Signs of a Main Drain Clog?

When your home’s water has nowhere to go, raw sewage will likely flow back up through your interior drains and leave a foul smell.

  • Water backs up into the tub after flushing the toilet

How to Repair a Main Drain

There are several ways to repair a main drain. The source of your drain problems generally dictates which repair method should be used. If your main drain line has a leak or breaks, a trench may have to be dug around the damaged portion of the line.

However, digging isn’t always necessary because trenchless sewer repair is also an option. To begin the process of trenchless repair, you must first find the damaged part of the main drain line that is causing the leak. To do this, plumbers can use a sewer camera to enter and explore the pipe until they find the damage. Once the damage has been found, either pipe lining or pipe bursting can be used to repair the problem.

Pipe lining involves inserting an inflatable tube covered in epoxy into the pipe. When the tube reaches the damaged portion of the pipe, it can be inflated. While inflated, the tube will press up against the damaged part of the pipe, applying the epoxy in the process. As the epoxy hardens, it will repair the damage to the pipe. After the damage is repaired, the inflatable tube will be deflated and removed. If the damage is too severe for pipe lining to work, then pipe bursting may be employed.

Pipe bursting involves sending a cone-shaped device through the pipe. The device does two things. First, it destroys the existing pipe. Second, it immediately replaces the old pipe with a new pipe. If neither pipe lining nor pipe bursting can effectively fix the problem, then traditional main drain pipe replacement may be necessary.

If your main drain line is only clogged and not leaking or broken, then other repair methods may be available to you, including drain cleaning or having the pipe snaked. Hydro jetting could also be an option. Hydro jetting involves using high pressure jets to clear clogs, blockages, and debris from the drain line.
